Documentary reproduction; ISO conventional typographical character for legibility tests (ISO character)

No documentary reproduction process can avoid giving a more or less impaired image of the original document. So it seemed desirable to make legibility accessible to experiment and even measurable by specifying a typographical character for legibilitytests. If, in a particular documentary reproduction process, an identifiable image is produced of the character, it can be assumed that the same process will produce a setisfactory image of a printed text. The character specified - a regular octagon with two interior parallel stripes - gives manufacturers and other a useful means for judging the quality of their products or work.
