The principle of the method is saponification of the glycerides, and esterification of the liberated fatty acids in the presence of boron trifluoride. The general method according clause 4 may lead to erroneous results in the following cases: compounds having secondary oxygen groupings, compounds containing cyclopropane- and cyclopropene-groups, conjugated polyunsaturated and acetylenic compounds, waxes. For these it ispreferable to use one of the methods described in clause 5.
