Determination of gold in gold jewellery alloys; cupellation method (fire assay)

The principle of the method specified is inquartering the Gold alloys with silver, compounding with lead und cupelling in a cupellation furnace until a precious metal button is obtained, flattening and rolling, extracting the silver in nitric acid and weighing the gold. Applies to gold alloys incorporating silver, copper and zinc the gold content of which lies between 333 and 930 parts by mass per thousand of gold. Some modifications areindicated where nickel and/or palladium are present in the so-called white-gold alloys.
