In the preparation of this Standard, the following two principles have been followed as far as possible: 1) to standardize suitable terms and symbols without perpetuating unsuitable ones merely because they have been used in the past; 2) to discard any term or symbol which is used with different meanings in different countries, or by different people, or even by the same people at different times; to replace it by a term or symbolwhich has an unequivocal meaning.
