Identifies user requirements for systems supporting time-critical communications. Such systems need networks which allow both time-critical and non-time-critical communications. Focuses on the requirements identified in the field of discrete parts manufacturing, but the requirements may also beapplicable in other fields, including process control. Concentrates primarily on the requirements of event-driven systems, in which traffic flow and configuration change dynamically. Also discusses user requirements for metrics and benchmarks which can be used to compare and manage the performance of networks.
