The method consists in inoculation of the surface of a solid selective culture medium, using duplicate plates, with a specified test sample, further inoculating, under the same conditions, using decimal dilutions of the test sample. Then incubation of the plates at 35 C or 37 C for 24 to 48 h, and calculation of the number of microorganisms per millilitreor per gram of sample from the number of typical and/or atypical colonies obtained on plates at suitable dilution levels. An annex gives confidence intervals for estimated counts.
