The sample is heated at 900 C of contact with air for 7 min. The percentage of volatile matter is calculated from the loss in mass of the sample after deducting the loss in mass due to moisture. The moisture content of the sample shall be determined at the same time so that the appropriate correction can be made. When the carbonate content of a coal is high it is necessary to make also a correction for the loss of carbon dioxide occuring during thedetermined.
