The product has been divided into four main types, on the basis of the method of manufacture, and then into grades, within each type, on the basis of colour. The document is intended chiefly to cover the technical provisions for guidance in the purchase of the product.Mandatory requirements: the product shall not contain matter insoluble in hot alcohol, shall not contain any rosin and any orpiment. The remaining requirements such as moisture, colour index, wax, ash, acid value etc. are optional. The test methods specified are given in the annex. Cancels and replaces ISO Recommendation R 56-1957 of which it constitutes a technical revision.
