A weighed portion of the sample of solid fuel is burned in oxygen in a bomb calorimeter under standardized conditions. The gross calorific value is calculated from the temperature rise of the water in the calorimeter vessel and the mean effective heat capacity of the system. The net calorific value at constant volume and the net calorific value at constant pressure of a fuel are obtained by calculation from the gross calorific value at constantvolume determined on the analysis sample.
