Based on the measurement of the indentation of a rigid ball into a rubber test piece under specified conditions. For the purpose of better discrimination between the harder rubbers a smaller indentor should be used than that required for the normal method of ISO 48. The measured indentation is converted into international rubber hardness degrees. For substantially elastic isotropic materials like well-vulcanizednatural rubbers, the hardness in international rubber hardness degrees bears a known relation to Young's modulus.
